To feel at home at Sandals Royal Plantation

August 28, 2012 | By |

I just got back from another incredible experience in Jamaica. It’s my first visit this year and as always I stayed at the remarkable Sandals Royal Plantation boutique resort. The minute I stepped out of the car, I was greeted with a feeling of "welcome home" and instantly a sense of calm and relaxation washed over me. I breezed through check-in, headed to my room, and my favorite drink—a glass of cold ginger beer–was waiting for me!

Whether I'm there for work or holiday, I make sure to do two things: wake up early to enjoy the scenery, the lapping of the water, the humming of the birds (and all this while enjoying a superb pot of coffee), and the second is to make sure to swim everyday in the ocean.

Everyday I woke up at 6 a.m. and went downstairs with my BlackBerry and my laptop. If you’ve never been to Sandals Royal Plantation, it has an amazing verandah with an abundance of lounge chairs that all overlook the ocean. I grabbed a pot of coffee, settled down into my comfortable lounger and peered into the ocean—I could work this way for the next ten years!

At 7 a.m. I put on my bathing suit and swam in the clear aquamarine waters of the Caribbean Sea. After my morning dip I was greeted by a beach butler who made me feel right at home, handing me towels and greeting me with, "Good morning! We haven't seen you in a while. We missed you." I wondered if he said that to everyone, but when he told me that he visited Toronto and loved it, and was sad that he didn’t have the chance to visit Montreal as I’d convinced him how great it was, it dawned on me that he really remembered ME, wow!

I love this hotel, the butler service, and the ocean views from my room, and I made a promise to myself that I will return at least once a year to what I feel has become my home. After all, it’s the little things that make a home: after meetings and attending to business, I couldn't wait to get back to the hotel to sink into the cozy lounger on the balcony and enjoy my ginger beer!
