Insider’s Guide to Grenada

August 18, 2014 | By |

Richard Moss is the self-proclaimed Director of Adventure for Island Routes Caribbean Adventures. He knows a thing or two about what makes an unforgettable vacation, and takes us around the inspiring island of Grenada.

Why is Grenada known as the Spice Island?

Grenada is one of the biggest producers of nutmeg, cinnamon, all-spice and cloves. You’ll smell the spices on the wind, and find them in lots of local foods and drinks. Delicious.

Tell us about the Underwater Sculpture Park?

The Underwater Sculpture Park was the first of its kind in the world. It was created to commemorate Grenadian stories and encourage coral growth. Grenada has great diving and snorkelling. Clear, warm water, with lots of fish and corals for
amazing photos.

I like a bit of action. What are two must-do activities?

Pilot your own boat. It’s really fun to bounce across the waves, and you can stop at the Underwater Sculpture Park for a quick snorkel. Bike tours are another great choice—you can really get out and meet the locals. The rainforest and the famous black-sand beaches are very enjoyable too.

What’s your favourite spot on the island?

Fort Frederick. It overlooks Carenage, the harbour-front promenade in St. George's, the capital. It’s really beautiful at sunset, especially with a cold drink in hand.

What’s the one place we all have to visit?

Grand Etang. It’s a lake in an ancient volcanic crater. If you bring bananas, you’ll get lots of great photos with the Mona Monkeys.

One thing that will surprise Canadians about Grenada?

Grenada is part of the British Commonwealth. Just like Canada, Queen Elizabeth II is the official head
of state. Maybe that’s why Canadians feel so at home here.

What’s your favourite local dish?

Definitely the succulent crab at BB’s Crab Shack. And don’t get me started on the nutmeg ice cream.
