June 22, 2017 | By |

Costa Rica holds some of the world’s most fascinating natural wonders, including untouched beaches, lush rainforests, therapeutic hot springs and diverse wildlife. Its off-the-beaten-path setting is perfect for hiking, surfing and zip lining, but this volcano-studded country is also a great place to simply unwind on the beach and experience the true meaning of pura vida.

Our pick:
Dreams Las Mareas Costa Rica
Set on a sandy beach in the heart of nature, this upscale and sustainable property offers lavish rooms, the ultimate in pampering at Dreams Spa by Pevonia®, no-limit à la carte dining and the largest pool in the Guanacaste region. It’s also the ideal base from which to explore the ecological gems Costa Rica is known for.

Rod’s Costa Rica

October 15, 2014 | By |

As Corporate Director of Entertainment across all AMResorts brands, Rod Gahr has the amazing opportunity to focus completely on “guest enjoyment, smiles and laughs.” He takes us on a tour of Costa Rica, site of the brand new Dreams Las Mareas Costa Rica.

“In 2001, I had the opportunity to become the first General Manager with AMResorts and dedicated myself to helping to create something new, unique, fresh and unexpected in the All Inclusive industry. It’s been an amazing journey with AMResorts from the first day, and now having the rare opportunity to focus the majority of my time on developing programs that keep all the guests entertained 24/7 is a dream position that allows me to use my creativity to continually strive to create “Something to Remember!” for each and every one of our guests!”

Why did AMResorts choose Costa Rica for its new resort?

For me Costa Rica has been THE destination for many many years. Costa Rica is an easy destination to reach and the rewards of the destination are magical.

One thing we have to see/do in Costa Rica?

The one thing you have to do in Costa Rica is RELAX! Costa Rica is a very very relaxed country and culture. Take your time and allow yourself to be immersed in the local rhythm and tempo. Allow yourself time to stop and take in the wonder of the country and go at your own pace. Costa Rica has so many things to see and do, you’ll likely not find nearly enough time to do it all in one trip. I’ve been travelling to Costa Rica for weeks every year for the past 15 years and I still have not even scratched the surface of things on my list.

I suggest that you allow yourself a very flexible schedule, don’t overthink and over plan! When you arrive in Costa Rica and get settled, talk to the local staff to find the true hidden gems of the county and the local surroundings. You’ll find a long walk along one of the amazing beaches or in the rainforest just watching the wildlife amazingly rewarding.

What will surprise us most about Costa Rica?

Definitely the people! The locals have an amazing rich history as diverse as anywhere in the world. With so many ethnic backgrounds and heritages you’ll be surprised at the expanse of cultures, music, flavours and traditions, but the most impressive aspect of Costa Rica is the general friendliness and openness of the people. With the national motto “Pura Vida” or “Pure Life” it’s easy to understand, the people of Costa Rica believe in living life well and enjoying each and every day. There’s no need to rush, time is measured by the day, not the hour so take your time and spend it getting to know your hosts and the local surrounding areas. They’re very proud of their country, always willing to offer a smile and a friendly wave, or to share a cup of the best coffee you’ll probably ever drink while they tell you all about their country, recommend the best restaurants and give you tips on the must sees and dos.

What is your favourite place in Costa Rica?

That’s a secret! I’ve found a place that I consider to be “mine” and it fits all the mental and spiritual needs for me individually. It’s a place I can go and feel grounded and just completely at peace with the world. Living and working in such a fast-paced company allows me little time to completely decompress, so when I do, I have “my place” where I can walk for miles in the rain forests and along hidden beaches and coves, and spend my days just watching the real world without the interruptions of cell phones, traffic and meetings.

How did you incorporate Costa Rican culture into the new Dreams Las Mareas Costa Rica?

We’ll be taking every opportunity to showcase Costa Rican culture in our programs, including local musicians both contemporary and classical, local ingredients and recipes in our restaurants, guest rooms will be designed with authentic décor, and guests will have ample opportunity to interact with the local cultures and experience “Pura Vida” as it was meant to be!

What is unique to this resort?

This resort is in a local fishing community at the foot of the Guanacaste Mountain Range. It has the largest pool in the area and it’s the only resort in the area to offer swim out rooms.

What special events will take place at this resort?

I’m extremely excited to develop the new entertainment program. Of course we’ll have all our usual fun-filled events for which Dreams has become known, but we’ll be including a very expansive program focusing on the entertainment provided by Mother Nature! I really want to focus on nature, the local wildlife, sea life, watersports and scuba diving, and immersing our guests in fun interactive programs within the resort and surrounding area. This might include an enjoyable afternoon with a biologist touring the local forests and educating our guests on the biodiversity of the area, or getting a middle of the night call to come to the beach and experience a mother turtle laying her eggs on the beach, or bird watching excursions in the local forests led by an experienced guide. For the kids, we’ll have interactive programs with monkey watching daily tours, turtle conservation programs and educational programs which will allow kids to get up close with nature.  As well, we’re creating a very expansive interactive program which combines both entertainment with culinary classes featuring local chef’s so our guests can really appreciate everything that Costa Rica has to offer.
