Sarah Hartman is a Senior Designer at HPI Design. She was instrumental in creating the unique flare and flawless appeal of Sandals Barbados. She shares her inspiration and vision of the perfect island resort.
What was the guiding principle behind your design?
I wanted to create a clean, luxurious hotel with international appeal. We have 13 fire and water features, the longest swimming pool in the Caribbean, and a Riviera Italian pool with cabanas.
What about Barbados most inspired you?
The sea. The sea in Barbados is really beautiful. I incorporated its movement and colours throughout the resort.
How did you interpret the relationship between interior and exterior?
I really don’t ever want to create a border between interior and exterior. I like the view and design to be seamless, a complete integration of colour and atmosphere. I also like to mix things up and put a bathtub on the patio, to create a place to remember.
How about between public and private spaces?
We create intimate areas, shaded and private, throughout, by using low walls, and water and fire features. Public areas on the resort are very serene with low levels of light, water, and colour saturation.
What aspects of this project really got you excited?
I loved designing the lobby. It’s a contemporary space with a large water feature, custom-made fire features, a beautiful bar with shell pendants, warm coral stone, and custom-designed furniture.
Do you have a favourite feature?
I created a large niche with old-world statuary as part of the Italian pool deck and Portofino restaurant. It is so beautiful at night. It was just a wall of a building and now it has come to life.
What do you want guests to take away from their vacation?
We want our guests to leave refreshed, relaxed, and in love — to have memories of beautiful surroundings completely different from everyday life.
